Returning Citizens will face many challenges to successful reentry into the real world. These challenges include employment barriers, financial obligations, lack of appropriate housing, and strained family relationships. The goal of Career Services is designed to prepare offenders for these challenges in order to be successful, productive returning citizens upon release from prison.
To qualify for Career Services, an inmate must meet the program criteria timeframe, which is within six months of release.
The Career Services Program is designed to assist offenders in identifying career interests, developing resumes, conducting job searches, becoming financially aware and developing new positive behaviors that will impact their real-world experience. Career Services also assists inmates with access to short-term career tech programs and other educational needs. Inmates may complete High School Equivalency (HSE), remedial education, and adult literacy.
Inmates gain knowledge from different educational resources which are designed to assist inmates in making positive use of their time while in custody by developing new skills through education and job training programs, as well as addressing deficiencies and building on strengths to create a successful reentry.
Assignments consist of learning specific job programs available after release, developing time management skills, exploring career choices, preparing a resume, learning job search skills as well as the necessity of having well-defined goals. The inmate student is encouraged to design a plan as to how he will use these skills once released.
The Career Services staff will assist the inmate after release by referring them to community programs and developing partnerships with volunteer groups, local law enforcement, faith-based groups and other service providers that can assist in maintaining stability for the returning citizen.
